CHAPTER 15

Even though I hadn't spent a lot of time at work this week, taking time off to try and help Harmony track down the missing painting, I was happy that the work day flew by today because I was now on my way to Hunter’s Hollow Assisted Living to talk to Bernie. I didn't know why I was so excited to see if Bernie was the long-lost love of Sebastian Thornwood. I guess it was just the romantic in me, who hoped that maybe after all these years, I could bring them together. After all, Sebastian never married and had essentially dedicated his life to painting lilacs, which he had started painting because of Bernie. That was so sweet. Luckily, I had brought Topknot and Bella to work with me today because they were always a hit with the crowd at the assisted living facility. In fact, as we turned on the road which took us to the place, Bella started whining and fidgeting in the seat. She loved getting attention and she knew anytime we came here she was going to get plenty.

“Calm down, girl. We will be there soon,” I said, which just intensified her whining. And, of course, Topknot had to get his two cents in and started quacking. “Good thing you guys are cute,” I muttered, finding them annoying right now. I got out and grabbed Topknot's carrier from the back and unbuckled Bella from the seat. I grabbed her leash, and as soon as I walked in, I saw Bernie behind the counter.

She saw me and waved. Bella pulled on her leash, and I knew what she wanted, so I let go, and she headed over to Bernie, wagging her tail and bouncing. She knew she wasn't supposed to jump, but I could tell she was so excited she could hardly contain herself, probably because not only did Bernie give her attention, but now that we were regular visitors here, she also knew that there were treats behind the counter. I let Topknot out, and within a few minutes of us being here, they started to draw a crowd. While they lapped up every bit of attention, Bernie came over and stood next to me.

“It's so great when you can stop by here. I don't think there's a single person in this place who doesn't love Bella and Topknot.”

“I don't think there's a single person in this place who they don't love as well and, speaking of love, I came because I have a question for you.”

“A question about love?” She furrowed her brow.

“Kind of.”

“Don't tell me that something is going on with you and Cooper,” she said, now looking worried.

“Oh no, not at all. Everything is great there.”

“Thank goodness. You two make such a great couple.”

“This is actually about your love life.”

“My love life?” she said with a laugh. “I can assure you my love life is nonexistent. Not that I don’t sometimes think about meeting someone and having companionship. My late ex-husband, God rest his soul, was pretty amazing.
